What is WOVM?
Whole-of-Vehicle-Marking is the pervasive application of unique identifiers to all the major engine parts, transmission and panels of a vehicle.

Over 7,000 DataDots each laser etched with the vehicle's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), are applied to a vehicle in an adhesive with an ultra-violet trace marker. The DataDots and adhesive include authenticating agents that cannot be duplicated by counterfeiters.

Thieves are not interested in stealing vehicles that they can be caught with. Thieves want to steal a vehicle, strip it for parts or re-birth it, then on-sell it as soon as possible in order to make a profit. If the vehicle is "marked" with DataDots, in effect it is worthless to the thief as it is too easy for them to be caught; DataDots give a vehicle its own DNA.

Over five years ago, Subaru New Zealand took a major step forward in looking after their customers; they started putting DataDot WOVM on every New Zealand new Subaru sold in New Zealand.

Recently, Subaru undertook a study of stolen Subaru vehicles over a five year period, to determine the theft rates of New Zealand new Subaru vehicles fitted with DataDots and immobilisers.

Over the five year study period from 2004 to 2009, Subaru sold 10,781 Subaru vehicles new in New Zealand which were all fitted with DataDot WOVM.

Over that five year period, just 38 New Zealand new Subaru vehicles fitted with DataDots were stolen.

To put this into context the total number of Subaru vehicles, both New Zealand new and used imports, actually stolen over the five year period was a massive 11,258 vehicles. But just 38 of these were DataDotted New Zealand new Subaru vehicles.

Subaru New Zealand's strategy of engine immobiliser and DataDot WOVM has been so effective in reducing theft that in 2009 just nine New Zealand new Subaru fitted with WOVM and advanced engine immobiliser technology were stolen out of more than 10,500 on the road. So the probability of having your New Zealand new Subaru stolen last year was less than a miniscule 0.0009.
